Building
on the success of the ‘Where Next for Livelihoods?’ workshop convened
jointly by Bradford Centre for International Development and Livelihoods
Connect this panel sought to provide a forum for taking forward
discussions between policy-makers, practitioners and researchers
concerning the continued development and application of sustainable
livelihoods approaches.
New
audiences and advocates are taking a strong interest in livelihoods
approaches, as the concept, principles and tools are spread and
adapted worldwide. The
February workshop identified a number of areas that require strengthening
in the conceptualisation and application of the approach:
o
Improved conceptual
understandings of the linkages between poverty, institutions and
livelihoods are needed in order to effectively target organisational
and institutional reform aimed at poverty reduction.
o
Clarification of
the challenges to development management offered by SLAs and other
people-centred approaches- how should we best assist in increasing
the sustainability of the livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable?
o
Increased systematic
and reflective analysis of best practice- for instance under
what condition do community-based approaches actually empower the
poor?
A
briefing paper addressing these issues will be prepared prior to
the conference with inputs invited from all members of the ‘where
next’ group.
A
panel including Clare Shakya (DFID), Catherine Allen (Concern) and
Anna Toner (BCID) will lead discussions and seek to respond to issues
raised in the briefing paper.
It
is hoped that ensuing discussion will advance some collaborative
actions (between researchers, policy-makers and practitioners) for
taking forward these aims.
