MA in Development Economics
School of Development Studies / Overseas Development Group
The study of poverty and development in low-income countries is attracting more attention around the world than ever before. International development agencies and academic institutions increasingly recognise that the study of economic development in a world that is experiencing rapid globalisation requires an approach that is analytically rigorous and, at the same, problem- and policy-oriented.
Directed and taught by a team of experienced and internationally-respected development economists, this MA in Development Economics provides advanced postgraduate level training opportunities both to recent graduates and mid-career professionals looking to update their analytical techniques and practical skills, or to acquire new ones.
This course emphasises the development of research skills that are essential, not only for further study in the field of development economics, but also in practical development work, preparing students for employment with government ministries, national and international development agencies, NGOs, and the private sector.
The Masters in Development Economics (MADE) received 1+3 recognition in the recent ESRC (Economic & Social Research Council) interim recognition exercise. This means that the MADE meets the formal ESRC requirements for research training in economics at the Master's level, as spelt out in the ESRC guidelines. It also means that UK and EU applicants to the MADE may apply for funding of PhD research under the 1+3 or the +3 studentship programmes of the ESRC.
