MA International Social Development
University of East Anglia: School of International Development

The MA International Social Development offers a comprehensive overview of social development, combining academic and theoretical perspectives with more practical and policy-focussed approaches. Key themes of this Masters degree include vulnerability and social exclusion, poverty, gender relations and mainstreaming, and social analysis. We pay particular attention to issues such as social equality, education, migration, health provision and policy, the implications of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the role of civil society. In the last two decades it has become apparent that 'development' goes far beyond economic growth and encompasses broader human and social dimensions. The emerging paradigm is now influencing the agendas of major international development agencies, including the World Bank, UNDP, the EU, and the UK Department for International Development (DFID), as well as other bilateral donors. The core course modules for this MA, are:

  • Introduction to Social Development
  • Gender Difference and Social Policy
The first covers theories of social development and challenges of translating theory into policy. The second applies concepts of gender and difference to a range of social policy issues. You will be able to complement these courses with choices from the School's wide variety of modules, including those on gender, education, environment, research techniques, and contemporary development issues. If you have a good academic background in the social sciences you are eligible to apply to this degree.
