MA in Participation, Power and Social Change
Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex

The MA is constructed around an iterative cycle of critical reflection on experience, linking applied practice with theory and conceptual learning. It is formed of three parts over an 18-month period. In Part 1, students spend 12 weeks at the Institute engaged in study of theories and concepts of participation, policy and development. They will also learn a range of skills to enable them to undertake a process of action learning within a work context, based on a learning plan which will be put into practice during the 12 months of Part 2. Students return to IDS for 10 weeks for Part 3, in which they present a reflective essay and a portfolio which provides evidence of their learning. They then complete the programme, with several presentations and further study of specific topics, finally preparing a 10,000 word dissertation that synthesises their learning overall. Applicants are responsible for arranging their own placements for work-based learning. Applications must be accompanied by an initial letter of support from the host organisation. By the end of the programme, students will be equipped with: • an understanding of conceptual, theoretical and methodological approaches to participation, power and social change as applied to practical challenges in development and governance; • practical skills in participatory processes and action research, including design, management, facilitation, communication, networking, evaluation and teamwork; • abilities of critical thinking, analysis and reflective practice, and personal development of values and attitudes useful in pursuing participatory approaches.
