MSc / Diploma in Environment and Sustainable Development

The programme of study leading to the degree of MSc in Environment and Sustainable Development is designed for: 1. those intending to pursue careers as managers of environmental projects; 2. the professional planning staff of Ministries concerned with the design and implementation of environmental policies (especially in developing countries); 3. those working in this subject area in international agencies or academic and research institutes. The MSc programme comprises four core modules, two optional modules from a wide choice, a programme of research training and a dissertation. The Diploma in Environment and Sustainable Development places less emphasis on research training than does the MSc programme, but will, nonetheless, provide a thorough grounding in the policy issues and techniques of analysis in this area, and will be appropriate for a range of career options in the environment and sustainable development field.

Entry requirements
Minimum upper second class honours degree, or comparable non-UK degree, in a relevant field of study. Occasionally on a case-by-case basis candidates with other qualifications and/or relevant work experience may be admitted. Students whose native language is not English require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 (with no sub-text less than 6.0) or a minimum score of 237 in computer-based TOEFL.

End September – mid September for full-time MSc; End September – June for full-time Diploma.

In addition to the formal teaching programme, students are encouraged to attend the Departmental seminars, which attract a wide range of distinguished speakers, and the annual Reading Party, which examines a development-related topic in depth. All students have the opportunity to attend courses in Information Technology and Research Methodology. Pre-sessional courses in English and in Study Skills are also available.
