MSc / Diploma in Finance and Economic Development

The course of study leading to the degree of MSc in Finance and Economic Development is designed for: 1. those intending to pursue careers in teaching and/or research in the general field of economic development or the specialist areas offered as optional subjects; 2. government officials wishing to expand their knowledge of various aspects of economic development; 3. staff in international agencies or in other organisations concerned with economic development. The MSc programme comprises five core modules, one optional module from a wide choice, a programme of research training and a dissertation. The Diploma in Finance and Economic development places less emphasis on research training than the MSc programme, but will, nonetheless, provide a thorough grounding in the policy issues and techniques of analysis in this area, and will be appropriate for a range of career options in finance and development.

Entry requirements
Minimum upper second class honours degree, or comparable non-UK degree. This should be a degree in economics or a joint degree with a significant emphasis on economics. Occasionally on a case-by-case basis candidates with other qualifications and/or relevant work experience may be admitted. Students whose native language is not English require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 (with no sub-text less than 6.0) or a minimum score of 237 in computer-based TOEFL.

In addition to the formal teaching programme, students are encouraged to attend the Departmental seminars, which attract a wide range of distinguished speakers, and the annual Reading Party, which examines a development-related topic in depth. All students have the opportunity to attend courses in Information Technology and Research Methodology. Pre-sessional courses in English and in Study Skills are also available.
