Management Information Systems for Monitoring and Evaluating
School of International Development / Overseas Development Group
This short course provides all those engaged in Project Management and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) with the opportunity to develop a Management Information System (MIS) over a two week period. MIS are expected to provide you with a range of powerful outputs, including: * Performance information about your project * Financial appraisal of the project’s inputs and outputs * A clear perception of the expected and realised impact of the project * An understanding of the rate of travel of the project towards its final goal In Week One each user will be facilitated in designing their own MIS in outline. You will be prompted and encouraged to consider what your information needs are prior to your arrival at UEA. The first week provides a practical and usable information system design including: • A view of the current known and ‘hidden’ problem issues in your project context • An end user view of the MIS information products and inputs • A blended and workable model of the final MIS containing both social and technical objectives for the system • An overview of the interfaces which will be used in the MIS • Details for the MIS roll-out including implementation strategy, training structure and hardware and software issues In Week Two you will be assisted by software engineers to take the design on from week one and develop it into a functional prototype. Whilst this will involve some software skills, the course consultants will usually encourage you to make use of commonly available software packages (e.g. database, spreadsheet and WWW technologies). Participants will take home a workable prototype which can be presented and demonstrated to senior management at your home organisation.
