2011 Co-Investigator, Swahili Seas, DFID/ESRC/NERC Ecosystems Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA), January 2011 – December 2012. 2010 Principal Investigator, DFID/ESRC/NERC Ecosystems Services for Poverty Alleviation funded Partnership and Project Development research grant, ‘Capturing the value of coastal ecosystem services for poverty alleviation in East and Southern Africa’, July – December. 2009 Co-author of a country case study paper reviewing development aid within fisheries in Uganda since 1976, identifying lessons for development assistance, under the World Bank funded “The political economy of fisheries reform: lessons and applications for development assistance”, led by IDDRA Ltd. 2002 Team member in DFID-funded research on ‘Enhancing livelihoods and Natural Resource Management in Peri-Urban Villages near Hubli-Dharwad, Karnataka’. Responsible for institutional and policy analysis, using documentary analysis and key informant interviews, and supporting local NGOs in participatory monitoring and evaluation. 2001- 2002 Team member in DFID-funded research on ‘Participatory action plans development for natural resource management around Hubli-Dharwad’. Supported participatory planning processes; liaised with local NGOs and local government. 2000 - 2001 Team member in DFID-funded research on ‘Filling gaps in knowledge about the peri-urban interface around Hubli-Dharwad’, responsible for the analysis of trends in land transactions, with quantitative analysis and case studies, and for supporting livelihood and poverty analysis. 2000 – 2001 Project Leader for DFID-funded research on the development of ‘Further knowledge of livelihoods affected by urban transition, Kumasi, Ghana’. Led a multi-disciplinary and international research team in generating further information on livelihoods in peri-urban Kumasi, using secondary data, surveys and key informant interviews. 1999– 2001 Project Leader for the development and piloting of poverty-environment indicators for the Sustainable Development Unit of DFID, supporting field work in Uganda, Nepal and Nicaragua. 1998 Team member in the analysis of the performance of World Bank projects in the 1990s in exploiting positive linkages between environment and poverty (DFID funded). 1999 Project Leader in the investigation into urban agriculture in Hubli-Dharwad, focusing on the flow of animal manure from urban/peri-urban areas into agriculture and the use of solid organic waste. 1999 Project Leader in DFID-funded research on the development of a decision framework for valuing peri-urban natural resource productivity. Worked with economists to develop and pilot test a framework for generating economic values for natural resource use and management in peri-urban areas. 1999 Team member with the Department of Economics, University of Birmingham, in carrying out a contingent valuation survey to estimate the amenity value of the River Tame. 1998 - 2000 Team member in the DFID-funded ‘Urban Governance, Partnership and Poverty’ research programme. Analyzed environmental governance and access issues for the poor in urban areas, including water, sanitation, waste collection, housing and land, with specific support for the research in Ghana. 1998 – 1999 Project Leader for DFID-funded research examining the use of organic urban waste as a soil ameliorant in Hubli-Dharwad, India. Responsible for institutional and policy analysis and support for participatory research with local farmers, as well as project planning, budgeting and financial reporting, including sub-contracting to UK and Indian counterparts. 1997 Team member in DFID-funded peri-urban interface research on natural resource management issues in Hubli-Dharwad for the generation of baseline data on natural resource management, focusing on waste and water. 1996 Team member in a scoping study in South Asia to generated data on potential locations for DFID peri-urban research, as
