Science The Programme continues to make significant contributions to the scientific understanding of adaptation to climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fourth assessment report is due to be published in 2007, for which Saleemul Huq, the Programme’s director, is preparing a paper on “Adaptation and Mitigation”. He is also on the technical advisory committee of a research programme, the Assessment of Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in 40 developing countries. In-country development Focus has been on learning lessons from LDCs such as Bangladesh and Mali, which have made progress towards mainstreaming adaptation into their national activities. A report was officially launched at the UN in New York at an event hosted by the Under-Secretary General for LDCs. Involvement continues with development of technical support papers for the Adaptation Policy Framework as part of the United Nations Development Programme-GEF National Communications Support Programme. This aims to provide technical guidance to national climate change teams on implementing adaptation activities. Information and advocacy: Articles have been produced for wider dissemination, however, the main focus of the advocacy work revolves around the issue of adaptation, and the Programme is currently exploring contacts with development NGOs in the UK, such as Oxfam and Action Aid, with a view to building a climate change campaign. The aim is to sensitise such organisations to climate change issues and provide intellectual and analytical support where necessary.
