The Strategies, Planning and Assessment (SPA) Programme at IIED combines: * Policy-relevant research on the mechanisms and "tools" for sustainable development planning and assessment: * Sustainable development strategies and similar strategic planning processes (national to local) promoting holistic, process-orientated, multi- and inter-disciplinary, multi- stakeholder approaches) * Land use and rural planning; * Supporting tools such as environmental assessment (environmental impact assessment, strategic environmental assessment, sustainability assessment; visioning and scenario planning; resource surveys); * Capacity-building with developing country centres of excellence and governments; * Advice, support and technical assistance to donors, governments, agencies and NGOs; and * Information provision through publications, networks, and websites SPA has also undertaken work on environmental profiles; community-based natural resource management, wetlands and water management.
