Hans W. Singer (29 November 1910 - 26 February 2006)
We are very sad to announce the death of Professor Sir Hans W. Singer early on Sunday 26 February.
Sir Hans was President of the DSA between 1988 and 1990 and one of the founders of development economics, celebrated for his work in many fields – trade and investment, child welfare, employment, technology, aid, food aid and the UN. He was a refugee from Germany who worked on poverty in the UK before the second world war, and was then among the first economists to work at the UN, from 1947. He had a hand in most of the big ideas in development studies from the 1950s onwards, including the Prebisch-Singer thesis on declining terms of trade, the 0.7% target, redistribution with growth and the concept of basic needs. He also had a hand in founding half a dozen UN institutions, including UNIDO and WFP.
He was active to the end, giving his last lecture to IDS graduate students in November last year just a few days before his 95th birthday.
The DSA awarded Sir Hans a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of development studies at the 2004 Annual Conference. Simon Maxwell's presentation to Sir Hans and his achievements with pictures can be read on this site.
A tribute to Sir Hans, written by his close friend Richard Jolly, is available on the IDS website: http://www.ids.ac.uk/ids/news/SingerObituary.html
