Agriculture & Rural Development

Next meeting: Poverty, Inequality and Agricultural Development 30th June 2004

The Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) Study Group of the DSA is holding a one day meeting on Wednesday 30th June 2004 at The University of Reading. The meeting will begin at 11.00 (coffee and registration from 10.30) and end at 16.30.

The format will include the presentation and discussion of papers, which will then be considered for publication in a special issue of the Journal of International Development in 2005. It will also be an opportunity to discuss what contribution the study group can make to the November 2004 meeting of the DSA, in London, on the theme of “research into policy”. There will be space and time for the display and discussion of research posters.

The theme of the meeting – Poverty, Inequality and Agricultural Development – has been prompted by recent debates about the future of smallholder farming in an era of globalisation. This is an important policy issue for organisations like the Department for International Development and other bilateral and multilateral donors. You may already be contributing to the current debate through DFID’s email consultation at http://dfid-agriculture-consultation.nri.org

We have six contributions offered so far, ranging from theoretical overviews to specific country experiences based on recent and current empirical research. It is not too late to add to the list: if you would like to contribute a paper with new thinking about the role of agriculture in poverty reduction, or with new empirical research that sheds light on the issue, please send an abstract (maximum one page) to Chris Garforth (c.j.garforth@reading.ac.uk).

In order to book appropriate room(s) for the meeting and to arrange lunch, I would be grateful if you could let me know if you are intending to participate. Please reply by email with the following information:

(1) Your name, institutional affiliation (if appropriate) and email address
(2) If you want to present a paper, and if so the title of the paper (with an abstract to follow as soon as possible)
(3) If you intend to display a poster, and the title of the poster
(4) Any dietary requirements or preferences for lunch
(5) If you need accommodation in Reading for the night of 29th and/or 30th June
(6) If you need help in meeting travel expenses (DSA study groups have a limited budget to reimburse expenses: priority is given to students and unwaged participants).
