Alternative Economic Development Policies

Aims and objectives for the Study Group

In the discipline of Economics, the neoclassical and neoliberal mainstream has promoted a kind of research that, while made elegant by sophisticated mathematical formulisation, is either sterile in terms of economic policy or has promoted neoliberal policies. Even the ‘new’ thinking that is identified with the post-Washington Consensus or the post-neoliberal policy agenda simply reaffirms and extends neoliberal views rather than breaking with the past.

Yet, there are many researchers who are dissatisfied with the mainstream and are involved in the formulation of alternatives, both in theory and policy. This study group intends to attract those researchers whose work (theoretical and/or empirical) produces results that are in contrast with standard neoliberal policies. This should be intended in a broad sense as no methodological approach (including neoclassical optimising modelling) is meant to be excluded from the research interest of the study group. Nevertheless, the research for this study group should further the search for economic development policies that are feasible and superior to those advocated by the neoliberal mainstream.
