Call for Global South representative on DSA Council

One of two Global South (GS) representatives positions on the DSA Council is now open, as Tuesday Gichuki steps down following two impactful terms on Council. The main role of this position on Council is to represent the Global South membership and the successful candidate will be chosen via an online election in December 2025 open to the DSA GS membership. We therefore invite candidates to nominate themselves and/ or others for the post.

Criteria:
Candidates must have been a DSA member for at least one year at the time of nomination.

Nominations:
Candidates or proposers should email the following to membershipadmin(at)devstud.org.uk:

  • a completed nomination form
  • name, email, current position and institution of the candidate
  • a statement (a) introducing the candidate, (b) explaining how they have engaged with the DSA to date, and (c) stating how they will best represent the interests of Global South members on the DSA Council (max. 250 words). This statement will be made public as part of the online election.
  • a CV of the candidate (max. 2 pages), which will not be made public.

All nominations must be seconded by another DSA GS member (ensure this information is included in the completed nomination form).

All eligible nominations will then enter an online election with Global South members being asked to elect one candidate.

Deadline:
Nomination forms must be received by midnight GMT on 3rd December 2025. The online election platform will open for voting on 5th December and close at midnight GMT on 15th December.

Obligations/role:
DSA Council meets twice a year (usually February and November) as well as just before or at the annual conference (late June/ early July). Council members are also expected to take on some specific responsibility as part of their Council roles. The Feb and Nov Council meetings are held online and GS representatives on Council participate remotely. The June (pre-conference Council meeting) is hybrid (in person and online) and the DSA is able to fund each GS rep on Council to attend the June Council meeting (and the annual conference) once during their three year term. The other two years, the GS rep will attend the June/ July meeting remotely if they are unable to access other funds to attend in person.

Please note that all DSA Council positions are voluntary and no payments are made for work done by Council members on behalf of the DSA.

Before nominating yourself or someone else, please read the DSA Council GS representative ToRs to understand what is required from the role.
