Call for Nominations for DSA Council Global South Representative
At the DSA AGM in July 2026, the first term of one of the DSA Council’s Global South Representatives, M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, comes to an end. Each Global South Representative can stand for two 3-year terms on Council. Jahangir is standing for re-election, however the position is also open to new nominations.
Therefore, the call for nominations for this Global South Representative position is now open and we invite candidates to nominate themselves or others for this position. The main role of this position on Council is to represent the Global South membership within the DSA. The call is open until 14 June 2026. The DSA is a charity and GS representatives on Council are charity trustees, please see the Charity Commission website for the responsibilities this entails.
All eligible nominees received by 14 June will be entered into an online election held from 15-29 June 2026, only open to the DSA GS membership. The successful candidate will be announced at the DSA AGM to be held on 10 July at the annual DSA conference in Dublin.
Criteria:
Candidates must have been a DSA member for at least one year at the time of nomination.
Nominations:
Candidates or proposers should email the following to membershipadmin(at)devstud.org.uk:
- a completed nomination form
- name, email, current position and institution of the candidate
- a statement (a) introducing the candidate, (b) explaining how they have engaged with the DSA to date, and (c) stating how they will best represent the interests of Global South members on the DSA Council (max. 250 words). This statement will be made public as part of the online election.
- a CV of the candidate (max. 2 pages), which will not be made public.
All nominations must be seconded by another DSA GS member (ensure this information is included in the completed nomination form).
All eligible nominations will then enter an online election with Global South members being asked to elect one candidate.
Deadline:
Nomination forms must be received by midnight BST on 14 June 2026. The online election platform will open for voting on 15th June and close at midnight BST on 29 June 2026.
Obligations/role:
Attendance at DSA Council meetings, where reps report on their DSA-related activities since the previous meeting. Council meets twice a year (usually February and November) as well as just before or at the annual conference (late June/ early July). GS Representative Council members liaise at regular intervals with GS members via online meetings and other activities. The Feb and Nov Council meetings are held online and GS representatives on Council participate remotely. The June (pre-conference Council meeting) is hybrid (in person and online) and the DSA is able to fund each GS rep on Council to attend the June Council meeting (and the annual conference) once during their three year term. The other two years, the GS rep will attend the June/ July meeting remotely if they are unable to access other funds to attend in person.
Please note that all DSA Council positions are voluntary and no payments are made for work done by Council members on behalf of the DSA.
