Make a difference in the lives of people affected by conflict.

The MSc Conflict, Security and Development at the University of Edinburgh explores the relationship between conflict and development and prepares students for careers in security and development. Based in the School of Social and Political Science, the programme equips students with the knowledge and skills to engage critically with some of the most pressing global challenges.

Why study this programme?

You will deepen your understanding of critical worldwide events such as civil wars, humanitarian crises, peacekeeping operations, and efforts for justice after violence. The programme engages with key debates about the links between conflict, security and development and enables you to analyse the actors, agendas and practices shaping these fields.

Graduates of the programme will:

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the links between conflict, security and development
  • Apply research skills and techniques appropriate to the study of development and security policy
  • Analyse and synthesise relevant data using interdisciplinary methods
  • Engage independently with new ideas and confront social questions with intellectual rigour
  • Articulate complex social ideas with sensitivity and nuance to different audiences

Flexible study options

The programme includes three compulsory courses and a range of optional courses, allowing you to develop a specialised profile as a development professional.

You can choose from three different dissertation models, depending on your future career goals:

  • Standard research dissertation
  • Policy-focused dissertation
  • Placement-based dissertation

Research connections

The programme is closely connected to the Centre of African Studies (CAS), home to expert academics working on some of the most pressing issues in security and development. Students benefit from their research expertise and links to wider global networks of experts, policy makers and professionals.
